Community Problem Solving

When it comes to working together to resolve community challenges, in many cases we’re out of shape. It’s like we haven’t been to the gym in months, and we need to get fit again. We need to relearn how to collaborate with a spirit of mutual respect.

Simply, polarization at the national level filters down to communities and families, making it hard to have productive engagement about shared community challenges. Add to that the natural differences among people, and we’ve got barriers to overcome before we can even start to resolve community challenges.

Community Problem Solving (CPS) is a general term for using proven collaborative approaches to resolve community challenges. A critical step in the CPS process is communicating and collaborating effectively – thereby building trust. This means getting past the barriers standing in the way of  collectively intelligent public engagement. Dinner and a Fight/ Dialogue is our proven, professionally-moderated approach to collaborative exploration of the tough or divisive challenges that communities sometimes face. We bring people together to turn divisive issues into constructive dialogue.

Most community challenges are rooted in conflicts between two or more equally valid approaches.

Working with us, you’ll experience a method for people in your community to move past barriers to working together. Learning to disagree respectfully and understand the “other side” is key. Our team-based approach helps your group arrive at a shared understanding of the problem and a list of the key factors that a solution must address. A problem well-defined is a problem half-solved. From here, the group can decide how they want to work together going forward.

Many modern challenges require melding among many points of view. We need to collaborate with a win-win spirit to get things done.

Our Community Problem Solving techniques are an ideal fit for replacing traditional, often-unproductive town hall style meetings. Whether for local governments, school boards, neighborhood organizations, any other organizational meeting where input from the public is sought, our methods have proven their effectiveness. In today’s highly-charged environment, we can help you move forward toward solutions to shared challenges.

Groups within businesses and units within government agencies often face the need to move past divisiveness to address important challenges that require bringing people together. These groups are communities too. Our Community Problem Solving techniques can help your group move forward to meet the challenges at hand.
