Yikes!) \u2013 its not a moral thing, it\u2019s a systemic thing, that we can design the temptations of power (and of laziness) out of the system. By giving them your attention, you are probably re-enforcing the niche and thus the\u00a0 tribalism.\u00a0 \u00a0<br \/>\nBalanced news is very hard to find.\u00a0 If nothing else, be aware of which direction your news source is slanted, then start \u201ctaking it with a grain of salt.\u201d\u00a0 Six sources we find helpful include:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gapminder.org\" rel=\"noopener\">www.gapminder.org<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usafacts.org\" rel=\"noopener\">www.usafacts.org<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allsides.com\" rel=\"noopener\">www.allsides.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gnomi.com\" rel=\"noopener\">www.gnomi.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theflipside.io\" rel=\"noopener\">www.theflipside.io<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.procon.org\" rel=\"noopener\">www.procon.org<\/a> \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A real hope is that the news media will see, report and encourage harmony, relationships,  and constructive disagreement.\u00a0\t\t<\/p>\n<h2>EZ 6:  When reaching for the TV remote, choose to watch a movie that promotes understanding, rather than movies that promote us-versus-them or winning-and-losing.  <\/h2>\n<h2>EZ 7:  A whole world, right in your own neighborhood<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Get a dog. People who have dogs go for walks in the neighborhood. People with dogs stop and talk to each other! You will feel more connected, out of the back porch isolation and thrust onto the figurative front porch.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Ask your neighbor to borrow an egg.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Make brownies for your neighbor.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Have a \u201cblock party.\u201d Or organize once a month summer Saturday morning donuts and coffee. Or a fall neighborhood clambake. You get the idea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>EZ 8: You think a conversation may get explosive.<\/h2>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/fighting-to-understand.us\/\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/unnamed-6-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fighting-to-understand.us\/\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/unnamed-6-1.jpg 512w, https:\/\/fighting-to-understand.us\/\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/unnamed-6-1-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Example 1: it is quite common to be asked, \u201cwhat is your position regarding such-and-such topic?\u201d And the expectation in our culture is to indeed have a position, even when we may not have any more than a 30-second news clip informing us.\u00a0 Stating an opinion based on little information will often then TRAP us to then defend that position. Now, if we are honest, this is a recipe for disaster! But it happens frequently.<\/p>\n<p>Diffusing technique: \u201cYou know, I haven\u2019t really studied that topic.\u00a0 I mean I\u2019ve heard some news about it, but it is probably more complicated than the news really has time to dig into.\u00a0 Are there multiple views of the issue? What can you teach me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Example 2:\u00a0 it is quite common that someone makes a statement that you just can\u2019t let sit out there. That your silence could be assumed to be agreement. So something must be said but you want to avoid getting into an explosive situation.<\/p>\n<p>Diffusing technique: \u201cI\u2019m not sure I see it that way.\u00a0 So, if we were part of a jury trying to figure out the truth of the matter, I\u2019d wonder about a few things \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diffusing technique: \u201cDo you mind if we put that topic in the parking lot and come back to it later?\u00a0 I can tell it is quite important to you, I\u2019m not sure I agree, but I\u2019m also not prepared to dig into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>EZ 9:  Return to your tribe. <\/h2>\n<p>At the end of the day, we can all use a place that feels like home, is safe, we feel fully accepted unconditionally, where we all know our station in life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is okay to have our tribes \u2026 just not okay to think them superior or to get trapped within them.<\/p>\n<h2>EZ 10:  Learn, explore, travel, read, watch documentaries, seek out an interesting TED Talk.<\/h2>\n<p>In the &#8220;A-B-C theory&#8221; of psychology, we build three &#8220;muscles&#8221; of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attitude (feelings &amp; spirit) and<\/li>\n<li>Behavior (doing &amp; body) and<\/li>\n<li>Cognition (thinking &amp; mind).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By starting on any one of the three (mind, body, spirit)&#8230; the other 2 will usually come along for the ride. Some days you may choose to feed the thinker in you with some meaty reading, other days you may start with &#8220;doing&#8221; by joining a group or visiting a new location, still other days you may want to stir your emotions with a movie.<br \/>The EZ Steps are not meant to be sequential. Start anywhere and see where it leads.<\/p>\n<h2>EZ 11: Attend a governing body meeting such as a school board meeting, or city counsel, or local court of common pleas.<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<h2>EZ 12: Attend a multicultural event such as a Jazz Festival or an Inter-Faith group. <\/h2>\n<h2>Use and Support Our Disagreement Tools<\/h2>\n<p>We need each of you regardless of how you engage!
